The Oriole Quartet
Allan Gordon Bell Field Notes interspersed with extracts from T S Eliot Four Quartets
John Cage 4’33
Olivier Messiaen Quartet for the End of Time
A fusion of spellbinding contemporary sounds from one of the UK’s most exciting new contemporary music ensembles.
At the heart of the programme is Messiaen’s visionary Quartet for the end of Time, a dramatic exploration of the relationship between calmness and complexity, and a compelling expression of his deeply held catholic faith, written while he was a prisoner in a German concentration camp.
Messiaen’s masterpiece is paired with music inspired by the sounds and rhythms of the world around us in Juno-award-winning composer Allan Gordon Bell’s Field Notes, and John Cage’s iconic 4’33”, an invitation to hear the sounds that no one notices, and challenging us to consider whether silence can ever truly exist.
“a stark juxtaposition between the destructive and creative potentials of humanity”
Steven Osbourne on Quartet for the End of Time
